Kai Sotto is set to fly out to the US on Sunday evening.
And the 18-year-old Sotto hopes to rejoin G League Iginite in the Disney World Campus in Orlando, Florida as soon as possible.
However, Ignite head coach Brian Shaw, who had earlier advised Sotto to make playing for the G League his priority, is leaving the decision to let the Filipino rejoin the team to the league’s bosses.
“That’ll be something that will be determined by the people that are above my pay grade,” said Shaw after Ignite’s 113-105 win over Raptors 905, Sunday morning (Manila time).
Sotto had yet to join Ignite this year, opting to join Gilas Pilipinas for the final window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
Sotto arrived last February 2 and only entered the Inspire Sports Academy six days later.
However, the Qatar Basketball Federation was forced to postpone the third window due to the rising coronavirus cases in their country.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas made sure that Sotto, who had already missed three games for Ignite, gets to fly back to the States immediately.
Based on the protocols of the NBA last season when it was held in the same campus of the G League now, a player must yield four negative RT-PCR results for four consecutive days before he can enter the bubble.
For now, Shaw is focusing on the players that are in the bubble instead of things that are outside of his control.
“Right now, I’m just concerned about the guys that are here and coaching them and we’ll see what happens when we get to that point.”
