Treat Huey back in Wimbledon

The country’s top men’s tennis player Treat Huey will be back at the hallowed grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for the first time in five years when he sees action on Tuesday in the doubles opening round of the 2022 edition of Wimbledon.

The 36-year-old Huey will be teaming up with Franko Skugor of Croatia as they go up against the Portuguese pair of Francisco Cabral and Nuno Borges in the Round of 64 at the famed grass courts of Wimbledon.

Huey and Skugor are coming off back-to-back quarterfinal finishes in two ATP Challenger events in Italy this June.

The recent Vietnam SEA Games men’s doubles gold medalist, Huey has had his best result as a professional player in Wimbledon where he has played eight previous times.

In 2016, he and Max Mirnyi of Belarus reached the semifinals. The pair also made the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open. That same year, Huey reached a career-high doubles ranking of 18th in the world. He was slowed down by injuries in the years that followed which saw his world ranking plummet.

He is currently 108th in the world ranking.

Skugor’s career trajectory also mirrors that of his partner Huey. The 34-year-old Croatian, currently 185th in the world, also made the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018. He reached a career-best world ranking of 17th in 2019.

Huey and Skugor will be coming in as underdogs against the higher-ranked Portuguese duo who are both just 25 years old. Cabral is 67th in the world ranking while Borges is 90th.

Huey and Skugor, however, will have the advantage in experience. Cabral and Borges will be playing in the doubles event of a grand slam for the first time in their respective careers.
