Kristan Yumul waxed hot during Gilas Women’s 92-86 win over Syria in the group stage of the 2022 FIBA Women’s Under-16 Asian Championship on Saturday.
The 5-foot-9 guard, who turned 17 years old yesterday, tallied 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the field, 9-of-14 from deep.
Besides giving the Philippines its second win in as many games, the standout out of Oxnard High School also tied a mark — a scoring record that has been untouched for 13 years.

Back on December 3, 2009, Chinese-Taipei faced the Philippines in the group stages of the very same tournament.
Chen Tsai-hsin outscored the Philippines all by her lonesome, finishing with 33 points compared to the Filipinas’ 30 total points. The Taiwanese won the game by a margin of 80 points.
That Philippine team featured future stars like Danica Jose, Lore Rivera, Jacq Tanaman, Kai Javier, and Trisha Piatos.
It was just poetic that a Filipina would also hit that mark.
For Yumul though, it’s not about getting records or personal stats. They are in Amman, Jordan for one thing — get promoted to Division A.
“It’s an honor and a blessing to put on the jersey and represent our flag, also very exciting to play and experience this level of basketball,” she said.
“In my opinion, the team would continue to carry on the support, effort, and energy that we all share together n give one another throughout the game. One improvement is continuing to be patient especially if we are down.”
