If necessary, the PBA will hold Game Seven of the 2021-22 Governors’ Cup Finals at the prodigious Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
The league made the announcement on Thursday, a day after calling off Game Six of the title series between Ginebra and Meralco. A fire broke out at the SMART Araneta Coliseum during the 3×3 Second Conference Grand Finals.
Game Six will take place on Friday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay. There, the Gin Kings could close it out as they lead the Bolts, 3-2.
The PBA had earlier opened the possibility of playing at the Philippine Arena, though it would depend on the availability of both the Big Dome and MoA.
The league initially shelved the idea after securing the MoA Arena if ever the best-of-seven affair between the rivals will go the distance.
But now, it could return to Bocaue as the PBA had to look for another venue following the schedule adjustment due to Wednesday’s incident.
The mega arena is a venue dear to the PBA. It is best known to have hosted a record 54, 086 fans for Game Seven of the 2017 Governors’ Cup Finals, where Ginebra edged Meralco, 101-96, for a successful title retention.
January 2019 was the last time that the league played in Bocaue for the Season 44 opener and the Leo Awards. That saw San Miguel main man June Mar Fajardo earn his record fifth Most Valuable Player plum.
Meanwhile, the league has yet to issue an update regarding the 3×3 Grand Finals, which stalled just as the pool stage was at its homestretch.
