Asia’s former sprint queen passed away on Wednesday evening.
Lydia de Vega (December 26, 1964-August 10, 2022) has succumbed after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was 57.
Her daughter Stephanie Mercado de Koenigswarter made the announcement on her social media account.
“On behalf of our family, it is with absolute grief that I announce the death of my mother, Lydia De Vega this evening, August 10, 2022, at the Makati Medical Center,” read her post.
“She fought the very good fight and is now at peace.”
Back in 2018, De Vega was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer.
Last month, she underwent brain surgery. The surgery though did not go well and she has been in intensive care since.
De Vega is a four-time Asian champion, two-time Asian Games gold medalist, and nine-time Southeast Asian games gold medalist.
She was hailed as Asia’s fastest woman during the 80s.
