Ginebra’s Thompson, Brownlee on pace for top Govs’ Cup awards

Will there be a double coronation?

Ginebra stars Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee are on pace to bag the top individual honors of the 2022 PBA Governors’ Cup, based on the latest statistical points (SPs) race issued by the league Sunday.

The do-it-all guard remained firm at the no. 2 spot of the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) joust with 35.5 SPs to his name after the semifinals, where he helped the Gin Kings oust NLEX to keep their repeat bid alive.

It was a dip from his 36.1 SPs at quarters’ end, since his numbers dropped a bit after being limited by the Road Warriors in the series that lasted four games. Thompson is now averaging 13.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 6.0 assists.

On top of the BPC race, still, is NorthPort star Robert Bolick with 39.9 SPs. His bid of winning the award for the first time in his career, though, has taken a massive hit owing to the Batang Pier’s failure to reach the quarterfinals.

At third is Phoenix Super LPG main man Matthew Wright with 33.6 SPs, followed by former league Most Valuable Player Arwind Santos (33.5). Rounding out the Top Five is TNT’s Mikey Williams with 32.6 SPs.

Meanwhile, Brownlee is leading the Best Import stats race with 53.7 SPs thanks to his per-game norms of 30.3 points — highlighted by his 47-point outing in the Semis’ Game 4 — with 11.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.6 blocks.

The 33-year-old American could be on his way to finally winning the Governors’ Cup Best Import award. He’s only earned the award once and in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup, where he battled it out with taller imports.

At second is Magnolia’s Mike Harris (49.2), himself the 2018 Governors’ Cup Best Import when he was still with Alaska. He is followed by Tony Bishop of Meralco with 47.5, and Cameron Clark of NLEX with 41.8.
