Mamuyac says career-game could have been anyone under Baldwin’s system

Gian Mamuyac has been showing that he is more than just a defensive ace for Ateneo de Manila University.

And on Thursday, the 6-foot-1 swingman poured his career-high, dropping 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, 4-of-7 from deep, with nine rebounds and a steal.

His scoring output totally eclipsed his previous high of 14 points which he set back on September 8, 2019 during Ateneo’s 81-69 win over La Salle.

Mamuyac’s offensive outburst came at a particularly critical time against the Red Warriors.

Figuring in a tight first half that saw the two teams tied at 39-all, Mamuyac dropped 13 points in the Blue Eagles’ third quarter breakaway that paved the way for a 94-72 win.

The Ateneo skipper though said that his outing could have been anyone. After all, Tab Baldwin’s system makes everyone in it be in positions they could succeed in.

“Well, this program is actually focused on making us players the best versions of ourselves. It’s not only me but I think all players in the program made use of the two years off to improve whatever they can given the limited restrictions,” said the 23-year-old swingman. “I’m just glad that in this game, I was able to showcase what I worked on but we know that this team is composed of individuals that are capable of having nights like these.

“Sa susunod na games, puwedeng ibang players din yun. Tonight was me and the next games, ibang players naman.”

It’s true as Dave Ildefonso, Tyler Tio, Angelo Kouame, Raffy Verano, SJ Belangel, Chris Koon, Gab Gomez, Forthsky Padrigao, Josh Lazaro and BJ Andrade have all had their offensive moments so far this season.
