Elien Perez finishes in 10th in Asian Weightlifting Championships

Elien Perez’ finished 10th in the women’s 49-kilogram class of the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships, Sunday morning (Philippine time) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 2017 Asian Senior Cup double gold medalist took the 10th place finish in the snatch after a lift of 73-kg on her second attempt. She tried to get 76 kg in her following lift, but she could barely take the barbell off the floor and eventually had to settle for 73.

Perez then started the clean and jerk with a 92 kg albeit the struggle to get to 165 total. She then tried to add four more kilograms in her following two lifts; only she faltered to do so and ended the night with 165.

Hou Zhihui of China took home two gold medals in the snatch and overall. The Chinese world number 1 set a new world record in the snatch at 96 kg, one kilogram heavier than her own previous mark set in July 2019. Her snatch pulled off her overall lift at 213 kg for a new world mark as well, also one kilo from compatriot Jiang Huihua’s September 2019 record.

Jiang, on the other hand, finished with the silver after a total of 207 kg. She attempted to erase the clean and jerk world mark with a 125-kg lift but had to settle for a 118 — the same mark she set in that same September tournament.

It was India’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu who took over the two Chinese in the clean and jerk with a new world mark of 119 kg and the portion’s gold. The Indian star ended at 205 kg total for the overall bronze.

Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah took the bronze in the snatch with a lift of 87 kg.

On Sunday, three Filipino lifters will attempt to put the Philippines on the board headed by no less than 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist Hidilyn Diaz in the women’s 55 kg.

Mary Flor Diaz and John Ceniza will join her as the two compete in women’s 45 kg and men’s 61 kg.
