At the young age of 25, Mela Tunay has decided to hang her sneakers up.
Tunay announced that she will no longer play volleyball to focus on her endeavors beyond the Taraflex, Tuesday evening.
“Actually, I’ve told a couple of friends na I won’t play na,” she told The Game.
“I guess, that’s where we’re leading so yes, I’m officially retired.”
Tunay was a product of University of Santos Tomas, playing there from UAAP Season 73 to 77.
In her pro career, the 5-foot-7 open hitter played for Cignal and Petron.
Tunay signed with Motolite in 2020, but the Premier Volleyball League did not hold a tournament that year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Early this year, Tunay founded Unlimited Athletics Club. But with her retirement and Chloe Cortez heading to F2 Logistics, UAC’s future has become uncertain.
During her playing days, Tunay dabbled in hosting while also becoming a talent agent. Now, she will focus on those things.
“I’ve been focusing on digital stuff as an agent and manager, marketing stuff on the side. Despite letting go of something I’m really passionate about, I’m gonna do something I love din,” said Tunay, who handles the likes of Myla Pablo while also hosting an ultra popular show in Kumu.
“Last year, I finished my master’s [degree], and isa ‘yon sa mga hinihintay ko before I say good bye to volleyball.”
