Another young Filipino is set to make waves in a Division I school in the United States.
International School Manila’s Jed Dy has committed to join George Washington, a school playing in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Dy, 17, will be eligible to join the Colonials in 2022 as he is still in Grade 11.
With the pandemic causing the young Dy to postpone his school visits last year, the son of Ayala Land president Bobby Dy decided to commit to the school that gave him an athletic scholarship.
“I was in contact with a few other schools but no one gave me an offer besides GWU because I needed to play in the US,” Dy told Tiebreaker Times.
“I couldn’t get there because of COVID. There were schools that were interested but I had to go to the US.”
Due to COVID-19, George Washington had to drop seven of its varsity teams for cost-cutting measures. Fortunately for Dy, golf was not one of them.
In GWU, Dy hopes to lead the school back to the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship, an event the school had missed for more than a decade.
“I am really excited to meet my new teammates in GWU and hopefully have an impact on the team’s success,” said Dy, adding that he can’t wait to be under the tutelage of head coach Chuck Scheinost.
“My goals in GWU is to win individual and team awards as well as maintaining standard grades.”
Moreover, he hopes to inspire the next generation of golfers to aim high.
“These past few years have been really good for golf. It’s been really nice to see most of my friends that never tried golf, play and really enjoy it. I have some friends who just started out and love the game,” he said.
“If COVID never happened millions of people would never bother playing golf.”
