PBA Season 46 to push through only if COVID-19 cases go down

The PBA Season 46 will only be allowed to push through — provided that coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the country go down.

That was the condition set by the government according to Commissioner Willie Marcial, as the league keeps its fingers crossed that it will be able to plunge into action amidst the ongoing pandemic.

“Sinabi nila kailangan bumaba talaga yung ating cases ng COVID. Kung hindi bababa, baka ‘di tayo makapaglaro,” said the fourth-year league chief in a virtual press conference Thursday.

Marcial, together with San Miguel Corp. sports director Alfrancis Chua, met with Sen. Bong Go and executive secretary Salvador Medialdea at the Malacanang Palace Wednesday to discuss matters regarding the season.

The meeting lasted for about an hour, according to Marcial, And one of the positive takeaways from that meeting was the assurance Sen. Go had given the league in terms of vaccine procurement.

Chua said that Sen. Go had expressed willingness to help the PBA in purchasing vaccines as the league plans to inoculate the entire league before going into the season projected to start between May and June.

However, Marcial said that even the league’s vaccination doesn’t guarantee that the season gets cleared to start right away as COVID-19 cases, as mentioned, would need to go down.
