AFF: Filipinas reach seventh heaven, coast to win over Singapore

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team maintained its strong start in the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship with a dominant 7-0 win over the Singapore Lionesses, Wednesday night, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Isabella Flanigan set the tone for the Filipinas with a fine finish in the 9th minute of the match. The Filipinas then saw their lead double in the 10th minute when a Singaporean player committed an own goal.

Skipper Tahnai Annis then joined the party with a header in the 19th minute while striker Sarina Bolden scored her second goal of the campaign in the 38th minute.

After the halftime break, Sara Eggesvik scored her first goal in a Filipinas jersey from close range at the 47th minute. Kaya Hawkinson then scored the Filipinas’ sixth goal of the contest with a header in the 56th minute.

Substitute midfielder Anicka Castaneda then put the seventh goal past the Lionesses in the 69th minute to cap off a wonderful evening for the Filipinas.

The result means that the Filipinas solidify their hold on 1st place in Group A with 6 points behind back-to-back wins. On the other hand, Singapore is yet to tally a point after two straight defeats.

Obviously, it’s important to be on the top of the table,” said coach Alen Stajcic. “It’s where every team wants to be and we’re pleased to be there.

We scored some good goals today. One of the parts of our game that we always said we needed to improve is on the ball. There were large chunks of that game where I thought we were good on the ball.”

Both teams will return to action on Friday. The Philippines goes up against Malaysia at 7:00 PM in Rizal Memorial while Singapore takes on Thailand at 7:00 PM in the Binan Football Stadium in Laguna.
