Indonesia fields SEAG core as World Cup hopes on the line in Asia Cup

JAKARTA — Virtually the same squad that shocked Hanoi a couple of months ago will represent Indonesia in the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup 2022 here.

Ten members of the crew that ended the Philippines’ 33-year rule in the Southeast Asian Games last May will run it back for the continental meet, which makes its way back to the country for the first time since 1993.

Headlining the cast are national team mainstays Brandon Jawato, Arki Wisnu, Abraham Grahita, Andakara Prasyawa, and Agassi Goantara.

Naturalized center Marques Bolden, rising star Derrick Michael Xzavierro, Juan Laurent Kokodiputra, Vincent Kosasih, and Yudha Saputera are also in.

Completing the crew are Muhammad Arighi and Widyanta Putra Teja, basically the substitutes for Dame Diagne and Hardianus Lakudu from the SEAG team.

A lot is at stake for the home team in the July 12-24 festivities, as they have to finish within the Top Eight in order to qualify for next year’s FIBA World Cup, which they will be co-hosting together with the Philippines and Japan.

The Indonesians are pooled in Group A, together with reigning champions Australia and West Asian squads Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
