Defending champion Vietnam laid another marker in its quest to defend its crown as the queens of Southeast Asia with a 3-0 victory over Myanmar, in the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship, Wednesday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Vietnam finished top of Group B with 12 points behind four straight wins and will face host nation the Philippines in the semifinals. On the other hand, Myanmar finishes in 2nd place with 9 points and will go up against Group A winners Thailand.
The semifinal matches will be held this Friday also at Rizal Memorial.
Vietnamese midfielder Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung was a menace against Myanmar throughout the game. The 2014 Vietnamese Golden Ball recipient scored twice in the first half to set coach Mai Duc Chung’s side to victory.
Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung capitalized on a miscue from Myanmar goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein to break the deadlock in the 16th minute.
The 28-year-old Ha Nam native was then fouled in the Myanmar box and she coolly converted the penalty in the 35th minute.
Just before the halftime break, skipper Huynh Nhu finished from close range to give her team a three-goal cushion coming into the second half.
The three-time champions then added to their tally in the 89th minute thanks to Pham Hai Yen’s header.
