PBA to discuss Season 46 plans with Malacanang

The PBA is set to meet with the powers-that-be as it remains persistent in staging Season 46 this year amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

League commissioner Willie Marcial said that he and San Miguel Corp. sports director Alfrancis Chua are set to go to Malacanang Wednesday to meet with Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and Sen. Bong Go.

“May meeting kami bukas ng hapon sa Malacanang,” said the amiable executive in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum Tuesday.

This will be the second time that the league will pay Malacanang a visit. Marcial and Chairman Ricky Vargas had met with the same officials back in February, where they also presented the plans for Season 46.

Marcial said everything that concerns the new season will be discussed, from the health and safety protocols all the way to the vaccination program, where the entire PBA family is targeted to be given the needed shots.

“Lahat ng aspeto ‘yun,” he said in the weekly session powered by SMART and presented by San Miguel Corp., MILO, Amelie Hotel Manila, Braska Restaurant, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The league has its fingers crossed that it could get back to action between May and July, but it is also cognizant of the fact that everything still depends on how the COVID-19 situation in the country unfolds.

April 18 was the planned opening date for the new season, but that got postponed when stricter lockdown measures were implemented in Metro Manila and nearby provinces following the resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

The capital, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal are all under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until April 30, and whether or not it will be extended will play a factor in the league’s course of action.

But that crucial meeting in Malacanang, according to Marcial, will give the league more clarity for the much-awaited season.

“By tomorrow na mag-usap kami sa Malacanang, siguro after one or two days, may konting liwanag na kung saan na direksyon natin.”
