Kobe Paras is now taking on a new journey as he tries to pursue an international track.
But it was a tough decision as according to University of the Philippines head coach Bo Perasol, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has led the 6-foot-6 stalwart to leave the Fighting Maroons.
Paras and Perasol have been in constant talks over the past few weeks regarding the opportunities Paras has both in UP and abroad.
“In the past few weeks, Kobe and I had discussed lengthily about his various opportunities amidst this lingering Pandemic situation. His commitment in helping out our program has gone beyond our initial agreement of him playing for us for one or two seasons depending on what will come his way after each season,” shared Perasol.
“He was unwavering in his commitment to play for another season last year. In fact, he was still committed for another season, if we play it this year.”
However, with the University Athletic Association of the Philippines only opening shop in early 2022 at the earliest, it was too long of a wait. Paras had just turned 23 years old.
“However, we are both unsure and not so hopeful that college basketball will resume this year. It is in this backdrop that we agreed that he has to pursue his other opportunities,” Perasol continued.
With Paras’ decision, he ended up being a one-and-done in UP.
During his sole year with the Fighting Maroons, he averaged 16.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He led UP to a third place finish while earning a spot in the all-UAAP Season 82 team.
Now, Paras joins East West Private in hopes of getting a crack in playing internationally.
And for Perasol, now is the time for Paras to fulfill his destiny.
“Kobe is too talented to be kept waiting for things to come. I believe it is his obligation to pursue these and showcase his God given talent. Our program was blessed to have been a part of his journey.”
