House committee approves Kouame, Marañon naturalization

Ivorian Angelo Kouame and Spaniard Bienve Marañon are a step closer to getting their Filipino citizenship.

The House Committee on Justice has recommended the naturalization of the two foreigners, Thursday afternoon.

“Maraming salamat po!” said the 23-year-old Kouame.

“I hope to work with the Azkals as a Filipino. I would like my dream to come true,” expressed the 34-year-old Marañon.

House Bill No. 5951 filed by Rep. Roberto Puno last year sought to grant Kouame naturalization so that he can play for Gilas come the 2023 FIBA World Cup. On the other hand, House Bill No. 7427 was also filed by Rep. Manny Lopez.

The two bills received approval last December 2.

The lower house will tackle it on Monday before the plenary. Both bills have to pass two more readings in order to be passed.

The senate also has its own bills regarding the naturalization of Kouame and Marañon awaiting approval.

Once approved by both chambers, both bills only need the signature of President Rodrigo Duterte to complete their change in citizenship.
