Vanessa Sarno barely misses Weightlifting Worlds minus-71 podium

Young Vanessa Sarno finished in fifth place in the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships’ women’s minus-71 kg weight class, Monday at the Uzbekistan Sports Complex.

The 18-year-old lifter actually tied with two others at 231 kg, but the tiebreaker did her in as she needed 128 on the clean and jerk.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s Patricia Strenius needed just 127 kg on the said portion and did the first try. USA’s Olivia Lynn did it on the second.

Sarno earlier lifted 103 kg in the snatch after taking on 95 and 101 kg in her first two lifts.

She then attempted to add three kilos on the 128 she first lifted for the clean and jerk. This could have placed her in a medal position – the gold medal position to be specific, with two more lifters taking the platform. Nonetheless, Sarno could not complete the jerk part of the lift and had to settle for 128, and hence the 231 total.

USA’s Meredith Alwine took the overall world title with 235 kg, edging out Great Britain’s Sarah Davies’ 234. Then, completing the total podium is Strenius with 231.
