Jenelyn Olsim might have missed out on the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix Championship Final, but the Filipino still managed to leave her mark.
It was her, after all, who helped Stamp Fairtex pull off the shocking submission win over Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat to win the inaugural Atomweight World Grand Prix at ONE: Winter Warriors last Friday in Singapore.
The no. 2-ranked Stamp revealed via Instagram that Olsim flew over from the Philippines to help her prepare for the biggest match of her blossoming mixed martial arts career.
In hindsight, it was a great decision to invite the Team Lakay athlete to her camp, especially since Olsim is coming off a three-round war with Phogat in the semifinals of the tournament.
In their matchup, the pride of Baguio City threw one submission attempt after another every time Phogat imposed her wrestling might on her. While she didn’t win, Olsim helped expose the holes of the Indian’s ground game.
Stamp exploited those pointers by refusing the Evolve MMA star’s domination of the grappling contest, even if she was repeatedly on her back.
Like Olsim, Stamp was relentless with her counters. Her persistence paid off after initially catching Phogat with a triangle choke before transitioning to an armbar that sealed the second round submission victory.
Unsurprisingly, the triangle choke was the same move that Olsim kept trying against Phogat, so it was only natural that Stamp picked up where her training partner left off.
Stamp will now proceed to prepare for her shot at longtime ONE Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee sometime next year.
But who knows, the Thai and the Filipina might have a future encounter, not as sparring partners, but as competitors – if they keep on winning.
