Metro Manila Sports Fest visionary Danilo Lim, 65, passes away

Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Danilo Lim (June 2, 1955 – January 6, 2021) passed away Wednesday after a second bout with the dreaded COVID-19.

He was 65.

Lim, a constant competitor in long-distance runs, was the staunch supporter and catalyst of the Metro Manila Sports Fest, a year-long tournament of various sports disciplines targeting the youth among the local government units in Metro Manila since 2017.

Under his watch, Lim, with the help of Metro League tournament director Bonnie Tan, was able to organize grassroots tournaments in basketball, volleyball, and bowling with teams representing various cities in Manila.

“(Chairman Lim) loved sports. He supported the MMDA’s participation in various basketball leagues. He also institutionalized the Metro Manila Sports Fest where various sports and games are played. We are really saddened by his sudden death and he will surely be missed,” said MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia.

Metro League mourned the loss of Lim.

“We offer our condolences to the family of Chairman Lim,” said Tan. “He is a huge loss not just for the MMDA but to the entire country as well.

“The Metro League and the Metro Manila Sports Fest would not have garnered the success and support of the LGUs these last few years if not for Chairman Lim’s efforts.”

The Metro League is the organizer of the MMDA’s Metro Manila Sports Fest, which was among the many sports activities in the country that were temporarily suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic starting last year.

Lim is survived by his wife Aloysia Tiongson and a child.
