Kenneth Mocon hopes stops vs Ayonayon, Wilson leads to ROS contract

Kenneth Mocon was definitely an x-factor in Davao Occidental-Cocolife’s championship run to Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan National Championship.

Appearing on Tiebreaker Vodcast’s Crossover: Inside the Chooks-to-Go MPBL bubble, the 27-year-old guard received a huge compliment from coach Don Dulay, who gave him the highest of praise.

“He’s probably the best wing defender in the MPBL for me.

“If a PBA team were to sign him, he’ll probably the best wing defender in the PBA,” said the Davao mentor.

In the National Finals against San Juan, Mocon was one of the main defenders against the Knights’ most deadly weapons in Season MVP John Wilson and Datu Cup Finals MVP Mike Ayonayon.

To back up Dulay’s opinion, Wilson shot a poor 18-of-57 from the field in the four-game series — good for just 31.5 percent.

“He played big minutes (in the finals) because of the match-up with Ayonayon and John Wilson. Those are two good wings right there, probably the best wings in the MPBL, and he did a good job,” said the Tigers head coach.

And with all the exposure in a championship series, Mocon’s confidence in his game has risen plenty.

In four games in the National Finals, the 5-foot-10 guard posted averages of 7.75 points, 3.75 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 21.5 minutes.

“Malaking bagay ito sa akin since nung Game One hanggang Game Four, nagi- improve ako, natututo ako nang natututo. Kumbaga ‘yung mga mistakes ko, nai-aadjust ko kaagad,” said Mocon.

“Malaking bagay ‘yun (playing time) sa akin sa pag ready ko makapasok sa PBA.”

Now, Mocon, the 29th overall pick in the 2021 PBA Draft looks to earn a contract with Rain or Shine and join his brother Javee.
