Having better protocols led to Basilan joining VisMin Super Cup

Basilan finally broke its silence regarding its move to join upstart professional league Pilipinas Vis-Min Super Cup, Monday evening.

Partly, their move was because of how their Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan campaign had ended. But team manager Jax Chua also said that it was really bound to happen because of the difference of protocols Vis-Min Super Cup has compared to the MPBL.

“Nakita po kasi namin siya na platform na nagbigay ng credible na paglalaruan. May base set sila na guidelines na maganda. Nag-create sila ng magandang protocols at environment kung saan puwede laruan ng players,” said Chua during their unveiling which was hosted on Snow Badua’s Facebook page.

“Kasi hindi naman kaila sa inyo na naglaro kami sa kabilang liga na hindi kami nabigyan ng chance. Our management namin at big boss namin, tingin nila hindi namin na-carry out yung objective namin to represent Basilan. Kaya niya binuo nila yung team na ito is to redefine Basilan,” he continued.

“So nakita namin nung sinend sa amin yung plano ni Sir Rocky [Chan, Vis-Min Super Cup COO] dun sa liga, natuwa kami kasi tingin namin sa Vis-Min Super Cup, yung games mapapalanunan sa court, hindi through something else.”

The Steel should have taken part in the MPBL Final Four in a bubble in Subic. However, two of their players tested positive for COVID-19 back on March 9.

MPBL and Basilan agreed to take a re-test on March 15. If any test yielded a positive result, the league would call the do-or-die game a no-contest, with Davao Occidental advancing to the National Finals.

Unfortunately, four members of the Basilan delegation netted positive results. Basilan’s brass has since questioned the sanctions.

The MPBL’s protocols were set by the Department of Health alone to help the restart of semi-professional leagues. These were the same guidelines followed by the Philippine Super Liga during its Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup.

On the other hand, the Pilipinas Vis-Min Super Cup is a league regulated by the Games and Amusements Board. They will follow the same Joint Administrative Order used by pro leagues like the Philippine Basketball Association, Philippines Football League, Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3, National Basketball League-Pilipinas, and Premier Volleyball League.

So when asked if a return to the MPBL is possible, Chua was non-commital.

“Honestly, I can’t speak on that regard kasi mga big boss namin na sina Deputy Speaker Mujiv Hataman and Mayor Julz lang nakakaalam.

“Pero yung hurt nila is nandun talaga with regards dun sa nangyari sa games namin dun after namin paghirapan namin yun. We felt like they could have given us a better situation. Hindi yung biglaan. Nag-create lang siguro dapat ng tamang bubble,” shared Chua, owner of Team Phenom Sports.

Joining the Vis-Min Super Cup will open a new chapter for Basilan, which will now have the moniker Peace Riders.

They will still retain the likes of Leo Gabo, Jonathan Uyloan, Jay Collado, Gab Dagangon, Jhapz Bautista, Irvin Palencia, Anthony Bringas, Bobby Balucanag, and Chris Dumapig, making their squad a formidable one.

That is why for them, they are no longer looking at the past but are now focusing on what lies ahead.

“Hindi namin iniisip yun pero focus namin yung Vis-Min.”
