Maharlika Manila to put up women’s team

One of the Philippines Football League’s newest clubs has decided to expand its operations to fulfill its objective of growing the sport inside its home city and the rest of the country.

Maharlika Manila announced that it has decided to form its own women’s team with the recruitment of new players to start immediately.

“Kamusta, mga lodi?” opened the club’s statement from its Facebook page.

“Meron po kaming MALAKING announcement para I-celebrate ang National Women’s month! Magkakaroon na tayo nang Maharlika Manila Football Club Women’s team!”

This development is an exciting piece of news, since women’s football has effectively been dormant amidst the societal struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Even before the coronavirus outbreak, there was a lack of women’s teams. Meanwhile, school-based squads carried the banner and produced players for national team duty.

Just as Azkals legend Anton del Rosario built Maharlika’s lineup in the past 2020 PFL bubble tournament, every player has an invite to join the club in this exciting endeavor.

“G ka na ba maging part ng Koponan ng Masa? Send us a personal message on our official social media accounts. Takits!,” furthered the statement.

There is still no word, though, regarding the coaches who will handle this program or what competitions the team shall play in.

Nevertheless, these are exciting times and a tangible step forward for Maharlika as it looks to play its part in building the women’s side of football in the Philippines.
