Despite putting an end to her streak of first-place finishes, Jewel Napa clung on to pole position at the end of five races in the women’s RS:X class of the 2021 Mussanah Open, Sunday evening (Manila time) at the Millennium Resort in Oman.
Napa slipped to second place in the final race of the day, but this result was discarded as the tournament officials decided to remove a result from the counted races.
The 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medallist took the win in the first two races on Sunday for a net result of 4.0 race points. Singapore’s Amanda Ng Ling Kai trails Napa at 7.0 net points.
Yancy Kaibigan, on the other hand, inched closer to Thailand’s Natthapong Phonoppharat after back-to-back second-place finishes in the fourth and fifth races.
The reigning SEA Games champion again had a rough start on the day after finishing eighth but got a reprieve after this result was likewise removed. He now holds 11.0 net race points, 6.0 points away from the Phonoppharat’s 5.0.
Former two-time world champion Geylord Coveta also moved up and is now in third place with 15.0, sharing the spot with erstwhile second-placer Navin Singsart of Thailand.
Renz Angelo Comboy, on the other hand, remained in eighth place despite a start penalty in the fifth race. He holds 25.0 race points after the day’s events.
