After hanging on to the lead the past two days, Jewel Napa slid to second place in the race for an Olympic berth up for grabs during the 2021 Mussanah Open Championships women’s RS:X class, Tuesday afternoon (Manila time) at the Millennium Resort in Oman.
The 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist failed to register a win in the two races of the day, finishing in second in Race 9 and third in Race 10, to round up the afternoon with 14.0 net points.
Singapore’s Amanda Ng Ling Kai took over the lead by the slimmest of margins at 13.0 net points after she topped both races in the day. India’s Ishwariya Ganesh rounded up the three-woman field with 25.0 points.
On the other hand, the three male windsurfer’s Olympic hopes virtually diminished as Thailand’s Nattapong Phonoppharat made a huge leap at 12.0 net points, almost assuring our Southeast Asian neighbor another athlete in the Summer Games.
Yancy Kaibigan, the reigning SEA Games champion, finished fifth in the two races of the day to cling to second place with 27.0 net points.
On the other hand, Geylord Coveta finally showed his form that won him two world titles taking second place and first place in the two races, respectively. The result puts him at a distant third spot with 40.0 net points.
Renz Angelo Amboy finally entered the top three for the first time in the championships to zoom to sixth place with 53.0 points after ending in second after Coveta in the final race of the day.
Napa and the rest of the Philippine contingent looks to bounce back as the last two regular races are scheduled on Wednesday.
