Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks doesn’t think ring rust will affect him when he makes his ONE Championship debut against Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang in the main event of the previously-recorded ONE: NextGen III, which airs on Friday, November 26.
They were originally scheduled to face each other in April at “ONE on TNT II”. Then Adiwang and Brooks’ coaches tested positive for COVID, resulting in the match cancellation.
Brooks has yet to compete since then. Meanwhile, Adiwang has already made his return, beating “Wolf Of The Grasslands” Hexigetu at ONE: REVOLUTION in September.
Despite having an in-form opponent and a lengthy break, Brooks has full confidence in his capabilities.
“I don’t believe in ring rust. The feeling never gets away from you at the end of the day,” Brooks said.
“I’m definitely prepared for whatever Lito or [whoever] ONE Championship wants to bring in front of me.”
Brooks is so sure of himself that he flew to Singapore just a few days before the bout, not minding the potential differences in time zones.
“I’m very confident in this fight. Usually, people are flying out seven days before a fight. I’m gonna show everybody that I can come out and beat their best in two days,” he said.
Moreover, Brooks thinks that there is no one whom Adiwang can train with who’ll prepare him for the type of grappling that he’s going to bring to the table.
Sure, Adiwang is a hard worker and has probably exhausted all means to prepare for Brooks. Still, for “The Monkey God”, it will all be for naught.
“I don’t think that he’s working with any wrestlers over there that can [get] accustomed to my style,” Brooks said.
“He can do his double underhooks and he can do all of the flying knees and all of that stuff, the Thai clinch… I’m used to that, man. I’ve been there and done that.”
