United City taps English coach Jason Withe

As it gears to compete on Asian club football’s biggest stage, United City decided to strengthen the brain trust.

Four-time Philippines Football League winners United City announced that English coach Jason Withe is now a member of its coaching staff, Wednesday afternoon.

“We are proud to announce the addition of Jason Withe, a UEFA Pro License holder, to work alongside Frank Muescan and playing-coach Stephan Schrock during the AFC Champions League group stages in June and July,” read the statement.

The 49-year-old instructor was born in Liverpool, England, and learned the sport of football as a member of West Bromwich Albion’s football academy. He has been active in the ASEAN region as an assistant coach for the national teams of Indonesia and Thailand, and several different club teams.

He managed BEC Tero Sasana early in his career, while serving as an assistant to the Thai national team.

Over the last two decades, he also handled Thai League 1 clubs Deffo, Superpower, Nakhon Pathom, United, Songkhla, Bangkok Bank, and Police Tero.

He also managed Singapore S-League team Home United from 2001 to 2002.

Withe’s major honors as a coach include leading BEC Tero Sasana to a Thailand Premier League and Thailand FA Cup double back in 2000. He also won another Thailand FA Cup with Sukhothai as a club director. Additionally, he was able to lead Home United to second place in the 2002 S League.

Hopes are that he can help bring a winning pedigree to United City when it faces the likes of Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale and China’s Beijing Guoan in the next few months in the 2021 AFC Champions League.
