Gilas poolmate Indonesia to host 2021 FIBA Asia Cup

Two years before the FIBA World Cup, Indonesia will get a chance to show its hosting capabilities.

The world governing body for basketball has awarded Indonesia as the host of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup set to take place from August 16 to 28, 2021.

This is the second time Indonesia will host the event as the 1993 tournament was held in the Southeast Asian nation as well.

“We are very proud to host the FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta next year, it is an excellent platform for Indonesia to display its basketball potential. It will also help us to prepare ourselves for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, both as an organizer and a national team,” said Perbasi president Danny Kosasih.

Indonesia will be given outright qualification in the Qualifiers. It is grouped with Gilas, South Korea, and Thailand in Pool A.

Also punching their tickets to the 16-nation meet are Group D’s Lebanon and Bahrain.

“It will be an exciting couple of years for Indonesian basketball. Hosting the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 and co-hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 is a massive step forward towards developing basketball in the country,” said FIBA Asia President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani.
