Kai Sotto shows defensive wares as Ignite bows to G League vets

Kai Sotto and G League Ignite fell to their veteran counterparts, experiencing a close 107-113 loss in a scrimmage held at Ultimate Fieldhouse in Walnut Creek, California, Wednesday morning (Manila time).

In his first full game with Ignite, the 18-year-old Filipino had five points on 1-of-5 shooting, five rebounds, and two blocks.

“Kai has been good. He’s getting stronger, building stamina. He’s learning to use his length. I have to find a way to get him more involved offensively,” admitted Ignite head coach Brian Shaw.

Leading the charge for the youngsters were Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green.

Kuminga had a standout game, finishing with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field and eight rebounds.

Green, on the other hand, led Ignite’s spirited endgame rally, tallying 22 points on an 8-of-15 shooting clip with seven rebounds.

Ignite’s G League player-mentor Brandon Ashley chipped in 13 markers.

Jeremy Lin also played for Ignite.

“I was pleased with the effort of the team, pleased with the effort of the players. They held their own against the veterans,” said Shaw.

London Perrantes of Capital City and DJ Hogg of Wisconsin led the veterans with 18 markers apiece with the latter also hauling down eight boards. Isaiah Briscoe of Lakeland and Marcus Graves of Stockton added 16 markers each with Graves also dishing out nine dimes.

Ignite got to the foul stripe more (28) compared to the vets (13) but the vets knocked down 15 triples compared to just seven for the rooks.
