Meralco ends San Miguel’s PH Cup reign, sets up showdown with Ginebra

SMART CLARK GIGA CITY – Meralco’s memorable run in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup has become even more special as it conquered a dynasty that is San Miguel, 90-68, Sunday night at the SMART 5G-powered AUF Sports and Cultural Center.

The Bolts overcame their twice-to-win predicament in the quarterfinals en route to ending the reign of the Beermen, who lorded over the all-Filipino conference in the last five seasons — a feat no other team in league history has done.

The MVP Group-owned franchise is now headed to its first-ever Philippine Cup semifinal appearance in franchise history — this, after making its first quarters trip in the import-less tilt after half a decade.

Just like in their last meeting two nights ago, Meralco had another strong start but it didn’t have to weather any comeback attempt late in the game as the Orangemen erupted in the third quarter and led by as many as 28 points.

Cliff Hodge turned back the hands of time and made 14 points and seven rebounds.
