SMART CLARK GIGA CITY – Meralco moved just one win away from taking down a years-long dynasty as it stunned San Miguel, 78-71 in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals Friday at the AUF Sports and Cultural Center.
The Bolts, who are facing a twice-to-win disadvantage, seized control right from the get-go with a 15-4 start through their deliberate attacks before staving off the reigning, five-time champs in the fourth quarter to live to fight another day.
As the Beermen knocked to within just four, 67-71, with 4:50 remaining in the game, Reynel Hugnatan and Aaron Black connived for five straight points before Baser Amer made his own bucket to shut the door close on their foes.
Hugnatan top-scored for the Orangemen with 16 points while Black came off the bench and contributed 14 markers, including 11 in the final frame alone as Meralco finally addressed its fourth-quarter let-ups.
Meralco will look to complete the upset in the do-or-die on Sunday, Nov. 15.
