OJ Porteria bids United City farewell

One of the most mercurial talents in United City and the Philippines Football League has shared that he will be playing elsewhere.

Attacking midfielder OJ Porteria announced that he will expand his horizons and try to add another successful chapter to what has already been a triumphant run as a professional football player, Monday evening.

“After nine amazing years playing in the Philippines, it’s time to say goodbye for now.

“I’ve experienced and learned many things during my time here and although I was born and raised in the US, I can really say that I grew up in the Philippines,” said the 26-year-old Filipino-American, who was born in Arlington, Virginia.

In his stay in the Philippines, the product of DC United Academy has been part of glorious stints with Kaya and Ceres-Negros.

The 5-foot-7 winger won the 2015 United Football League Cup with Kaya. He also won four straight PFL crowns, one Copa Paulino Alcantara, and the ASEAN Zonal title of the 2017 AFC Cup.

“My time at Ceres helped me grow as a player and taught me what it takes to be a professional. I’m proud to say that every single one of us always gave it our all every time we stepped onto the pitch and it showed in our performances,” said Porteria.

“Six trophies in four years!”

There is still no word on where Porteria will play next. However, a Tweet from United City’s Twitter account stated that he is off to Thailand, where he will presumably compete in the country’s top division.

“Although I can’t be with the team for the 2021 AFC Champions League, I know they will make the Philippines proud. I’ll be watching and cheering my brothers on every game. As one chapter in my career closes, another one opens and I can’t wait for the new challenges ahead. Thank you for all your love and support,” he expressed.

“See you all soon! Salamat po.”
