With women’s volleyball players finally having a professional league in the PVL, up next will be men’s volleyball.
According to Sports Vision president Ricky Palou, he is set to meet with the team owners of the Spikers’ Turf about turning professional.
“I haven’t been able to talk to the team owners but we would also like to move that way. If the women’s are turning pro, why not the men’s also?”
Corporations in the first-ever men’s volleyball league in the country are Cignal, PLDT, Sta. Elena, Instituto Estetico Manila, Cafe Lupe Hostel & Restaurant, Easytrip Services, and Go for Gold.
The Spikers’ Turf branched out from the V-League back in 2015.
Two of the league’s players are already playing professionally albeit abroad. Marck Espejo is current in Bahrain playing for Bani Jamra while Bryan Bagunas is in Japan suiting up for Oita Miyoshi.
For Palou, having a pro men’s volleyball league will inspire more boys to take up the sport as there is a future in it.
“It will get more kids involved in volleyball. It’s like the PBA since all boys want to play basketball to go to the PBA. That’s going to be the effect also for the young boys who want to play volleyball,” he said.
Just like the PVL, the collegiate conference of the Spikers’ Turf will be played in the Sports Vision Collegiate Conference, which will have a men’s and women’s division.
